Quercus Borago is a rapid-acting, effective remedy for relief of pain due to hemorrhoids. Apply the ointment locally several times a day as needed. Suppositories are generally inserted once or twice a day. The soothing cocoa butter-based suppositories are used for internal hemorrhoids while the beeswax, olive oil and lanolin based ointment is for external anal application. They both help shrink hemorrhoidal tissue and reduce recurrence.

Quercus (Oak Tree)
Mercurialis (Dog’s Mercury)

How does Quercus Borago work?

The chief ingredient is Oak Bark or Quercus, containing astringent tannic acid. This helps calm inflammation and itching while shrinking swollen tissues. Let’s take a look at the other supporting ingredients.

Mercurialis perennis (the plant “Dog’s Mercury”), also used in our Mercurialis Calendula ointment to treat skin wounds, infections and abscesses, is a healing balm for inflamed hemorrhoidal tissue.

What really causes this problem?

The blood vessels become slack and then inflamed and blood flow slows down, leading to swelling. This is a kind of varicose veins, often seen in the legs but which can occur elsewhere. The vessels succumb to gravity and do not maintain adequate tone.

Why does this happen?

Venous blood flow and tone can be connected to liver function – when the liver is overburdened or otherwise impacted, stressed by poor diet or other chronic reasons, it is unable to maintain venous tone, especially as we age or the body is carrying additional weight during pregnancy.

Louise Hay speaks about the emotional aspects as follows:

“Hemorrhoids are linked to fear of deadlines and an inability to let go and move on. Anger of the past. Feeling burdened. The affirmation she recommends is: “I release all that is unlike Love. There is time and space for everything I want to do.”

Other ingredients support liver function which is often a factor in hemorrhoids:

Hamamelis leaf (Hamamelis virginiana): is the source of witch hazel distillate as well as the whole leaf extract we make at Uriel. Witch hazel is often used as an astringent toner for the skin. A signature of the witch hazel tree is that the leaves hang straight down aligning with gravity, just as the blood vessels are weighed down by slow moving blood.

Hamamelis Virginiana (Hamamelis leaf)

Horse chestnut seed (Aesculus hippocastanum): the large solid seeds are called “conkers” and fall heavily to the ground when ripe. You may have been “conked” by one! Again, a signature of gravitational pull; the extract also has astringent properties.

Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse chestnut seed)

Carduus marianus seeds or Milk thistle, a well-known liver support remedy, the abundant seeds in the prickly thistle head are fatty and solid. Also used in our Chicory Ginger Bitters which are an excellent dietary supplement to support liver health, taken before every meal diluted with sparkling or tonic water. Bon appetit!

Carduus Marianus seeds (Milk thistle)

Borage leaf extract (Borago officinalis): supports liver function by balancing its heavy watery processes with innumerable downy silica hairs that mediate light and form to the body. Also found in Uriel’s Borago Lavender Lotion for varicose veins and tired, heavy legs.

Borago Officinalis (Borage leaf)

Finally, we include the metal Stibium or antimony, which brings form and structure to the slackened tissues.

Stibium (Antimony)

Numerous patients and doctors have found this formulation effective and safe. Quercus Borago doesn’t have any petroleum-based products or other chemical additives to absorb through the delicate and permeable rectal mucosa, and it tones rather than weakens this delicate tissue.
